“For next year, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences ought to give some serious consideration to nominating Andrew Joslyn for his “Awake at the Bottom of the Ocean,” which comes out today. Joslyn is a Seattle-based composer, songwriter, producer, arranger and violinist who contributed to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s Grammy-winning album, “The Heist.”
Joslyn’s compositions on the new album combine rock and pop with classical orchestral arrangements, helped by a variety of guest vocalists, including Mark Lanegan (of Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age). Joslyn skews more toward the classical influences than Jeff Lynne did with Electric Light Orchestra, and it’s a potent and unique mix. I haven’t heard anything like this since XTC’s “Apple Venus, Vol. 1” album, and it’s great to hear such skillful playing of orchestral instruments, not to mention hearing somebody taking chances and trying something outside the same old formula.

My record is finally out TODAY! Please take a listen, share, and purchase if you’re so inclined!
‘Awake at the Bottom of the Ocean’ started off as an exploration to find my own musical voice, and an effort to create a scoring/songwriting reel. But after a couple of months of writing the record, it changed dramatically after I suffered a horrific house fire. I experienced several forms of loss and trauma all at the same time. I lost all of my possessions, I mourned the death of my cat – who suffocated in the fire – and the fragility of the relationship I was in at the time was brought into sharp focus. By the end of the record I had truly lost everything that I was familiar with.
The fire destroyed years and years of sheet music and old scores, and in many ways this record was an attempt to reclaim the sounds that had burned. In here, melodies and orchestral themes fold in on themselves, and become repeated motifs throughout the record, yet each song is it’s own piece of art, with it’s own unique vocalist, and storyline. It is all a part of a singular soundtrack to a tumultuous year, which culminated somehow, in a sense of balance and acceptance within. Ultimately I found my musical voice at the bottom of it all.

Seattle native Andrew Joslyn is a composer, orchestral arranger, violinist, and producer who has a stunning resume of musical contribution work: Some of his highlights include songwriting and composing credits on Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’s The Heist, as well as numerous other recordings including Tom Chaplin of Keane, Mary Lambert, The Augustines, and many others.
Joslyn recently released his first solo endeavor, Awake at the Bottom of the Ocean, which shows off his facility with genre bending. Yahoo Music is pleased to premiere the video for the single “Desiderata,” which features vocals from fellow Seattleite, Queens of the Stone Age/Screaming Trees’ Mark Lanegan.
“Desiderata was a poem that hung in my parents’ house for years, and I would always wake up every morning to it, and read it. Over time, it became an internalized mantra of sorts, and I’ve revisited it many times since I’ve left my parents,” explains Joslyn. “The message of it — written by the poet Max Ehrmann back in 1927 — resonates so deeply, and spiritually for me…. essentially it had to be represented on my record in some way. The song — along with Mark Lanegan’s world weary, and deeply calming voice — is the spiritual anchor of the record. At the bottom of the ocean, there is always hope, balance, and the simple pursuit of happiness.
“For the video, I had my brother act as the lead. Our parents are both Zen Buddhists, so having him involved only brought the entire project and its message full circle.”
Jon Worley wrote a wonderful review of ‘Awake at the Bottom of the Ocean,’ and here is quick snippet of what he had to say:
“These songs sound like classical reimaginings of Nelson Riddle pop arrangements. Not just strings attached to old-school pop, but a complete internal reworking of the structure. With modern electronic and rock instrumentation built in as well. In other words, a unique sound.
Joslyn isn’t going retro, or arty or anything else. This album simply feels like the idiosyncratic expression of an artist in ferment. Despite the wide sweep and grandeur of the album, there is an intimacy and delicate beauty that makes this Joslyn’s own.
So, yeah, fans of Adele will nod in recognition at a couple songs. Those who remember grunge will marvel at Joslyn’s stringy approach to that sound. And folks who simply like to be transported will find themselves on another planet.

Hey Guys! Have some really exciting news! I’m flying down to Los Angeles tomorrow for my first red carpet premiere! I scored an entire feature film, and it is finally coming out in theaters! The film is called, “American Violence” and it stars Bruce Dern, Denise Richards and more! Death row crime drama at it’s best, and I had the opportunity to write, record, produce, and perform the entire sound track!

Support or hate Trump, rejoice or fear for the future of our world…. we still have to strive for happiness – and acknowledge the beauty that still exists in our world, and come together.

My Full length debut record is coming out in early February, and I already have a album release show booked for Feb 18! I’m partnering up with Seattle Secret Shows for the show – and I will be performing my new album, “Awake at the Bottom of the Ocean” with the Passenger String Quartet and several surprise artists throughout the night at a secret SODO locations.
I am the music director for a PNW TV show currently in the works called, “Life in the Bubble,” and here is the title sequence that I composed the full score to.

Happy Holidays EVERYONE! New music/VIDEO for all of you! This is a wonderful remix of ‘Plastic Heaven’ by my long-time colleague and music genius Budo. Really excited that I had a chance to work with him on this!
This Plastic Heaven remix music video takes place in the same world as the primary music video for the single, but it happens in a far corner of that world. We had a ton of fun improvising with Chris Kattan and guiding his character through this strange world that we had formed for him in the ruins of Bombay Beach. This location is found alongside the Salton Sea in Southern California, which is a bleak symbol of a once-opulent, once-popular destination resort that is now mostly abandoned, the sea toxic to animal life, permeated with the scent of rotting carcasses.
The character played by Chris Kattan is viewing Plastic Heaven from afar, detached and isolated, unconcerned about his social status online or keeping up with appearances, yet he still catches the occasional glimpse of that plastic lifestyle and continuously chooses to ignore it. The harsh and arid, sun-bleached landscape plays against the synthetic, staged indoor experience from the main music video.
This world and character take place shortly after the events we’ll see in another upcoming music video, which will be released in the near future. I hope that you’ll enjoy discovering how they all tie together in terms of themes, story and chronology.

Being a person who goes after a dream is hard. Being a small business owner, a musician, an artist, is a difficult, and ever changing environment as well. There are many obstacles that I deal with as a professional musician – be it the turbulence of the industry, the future of streaming, copyright reform, dwindling album sales, licensing revenue… and this is all on top of just the basics of trying to write a song/compose a piece of music, and feeling the self-auditing fire that I do every time I pick up my violin.
Where I am at now with my career, I feel it is important, and essential to be an advocate for my community, my friends, and my fellow musicians. I met with Shawn Bills of Senator Patty Murray‘s office, and Danielle Fulf of Pramila Jayapal‘s office today through the Grammy PNW Chapter, and talked with them about some important bills that need to be passed, in order to make baby steps towards making music a viable and sustainable career path for anyone that has chosen this path. I want my kids and future generations to feel that a profession in the arts is REAL. Music is a real job.
